چکیده

We have developed a numerical model for assessing the lifetime of ice deposits in martian caves that are open to the atmosphere. Our model results and sensitivity tests indicate that cave ice would be stable over significant portions of the surface of Mars. Ice caves on Earth commonly occur in lava tubes, and Mars has been significantly resurfaced by volcanic activity during its history, including the two main volcanic provinces, the Tharsis and Elysium rises. These areas, known or suspected of having subsurface caves and related voids are among the most favorable regions for the occurrence of ice stability. The martian ice cave model predicts regions which, if caves occur, would potentially be areas of astrobiological importance as well as possible water sources for future human missions to Mars. 2010 Elsevier Inc. Human utilization of subsurface extraterrestrial environments.

Caves have been used in the ancient past as shelter or habitat by many organisms (including humans). Since antiquity, humans have explored caves for the minerals they contain and sometimes for ceremonial purposes. Over the past century, caves have become the target of increasing exploration, scientific research, and recreation. The use of caves on extraterrestrial bodies for human habitation ha...

KILAUEA PIT CRATERS AS MARS ANALOGS: A New Direction for Cave-detection

Introduction: Detecting most of the caves that are likely to exist on Mars is difficult because their entrances must face skyward and be wide enough (>100 m) to be confirmed by THEMIS thermal-infrared observations [1]. Here we discuss the possibility of using THEMIS data to indirectly detect cave entrances that may exist in a small number of anomalous Martian pit craters. First identified in Ki...

Mars: the role of water ice clouds on surface remote sensing

The possible effect of water ice clouds on spectroscopic measurements of the martian surface is evaluated. We have analysed imaging spectroscopic data of Mars in the 0.4–1.05 μm wavelength domain, obtained during the opposition in March 1997. The images show the classical albedo units in the red, while in the blue the surface contrast almost vanishes. Condensates on Hellas, north pole, Elysium ...

Detection of Caves and Cave-bearing Geology on Mars

Overview: The objectives of the Earth-Mars Cave Detection Project is to identify regions on Mars likely to contain caves and/or cave-bearing geology through (1) the analysis of multispectral imagery from past and current orbital missions and other orbital assets (e.g., radar), and (2) the investigation of terrestrial analogs for the identification of associated thermal, and geosignatures. The p...

Caves and Karsts of Northeast Africa

At least potentially karstifiable rocks cover much of the surface of Egypt and northern Libya. Study of caves and other karstic features of this region has been hampered by lack of roads, rapid disintegration of the surface of friable, poorly consolidated limestone, wind-blown sand and other factors. Interbedding with marly aquicludes hampers speleogenesis locally. Calcareous and evaporite kars...
